Old Crows, Young Cardinals is the fourth studio album from the Canadian post-hardcore band Alexisonfire. Departing from the clean production/engineering choices of the 2006 release, Crisis, this release builds on the established sound of the band but contains distinct differences.
The two tracks that form the album’s title best embody the bands current writing. “Old Crows” has an amazing bass line intro, though it gets lost through the rest of the song as the bright guitar lines contrast the rough vocals. The strength of “Young Cardinals” relies on a simple fast pace drum beat that gets embellished with fills and over the top drum rolls.
The remaining eight songs tear through countless sonic guitar riffs as the vocals go back and forth between harmony and abrasion. The “x” factor on this album is the timing of the drums and the levels they are at in the mix. Give the track below a listen and see if you agree.
